5 Free (or at least cheap) things to do in San Diego North County: Carlsbad & Oceanside

  1. Well number one of course is the main reason you probably came to this area: the beach!

Carlsbad Beach: A beautiful long stretch of beach. You can often see dolphin here. There is a long paved walkway along the sea wall. There is a paid parking lot at Tamarack Ave. You will find lots of free parking in the town of Carlsbad if you don’t mind walking. There is also free parking along the beach on the street..during busy times you will need to get there early.

You can attend beach yoga and other activities through Cvaclubs.com

Oceanside Beach: This beach has a more lively vibe. Around the pier there are usually food vendors and often there are events and music going on. There is free parking off of Mission and in the Coaster station parking garage.

  1. California Surf Museum: This is a very nice little museum with informative volunteers. It is located with in walking distance of the Oceanside Pier. They have free admission on the first Tuesday of the month.

This is Bethany Hamilton’s board and suit

  2. Carlsbad, State Street Farmers Market: This is a free open air market on a delightful street lined with cute shops and restaurants. There is usually live music too. The only cost is what you decide to buy!
  3. Batiquitos Lagoon and nature center. A lovely walk along the lagoon. It is about 1.5 miles long (3 miles round trip), easy, level, wide path. Cute little nature center (bathroom inside)
  4. Green Dragon Tavern and museum. The original Green Dragon played a part in the American Revolution, so this little museum deals with the American Revolution, which is certainly not common on the West Coast! The tavern has a good happy hour too.
